Removing Gender Bias from the City Charter

The Rochester Home Rule Charter contained over one hundred instances of gender biased language, often referring to elected and appointed city staff as he or him. In response, my partner and I mentored a group of high school students who created an alternative draft of all nineteen chapters of the City Charter with every instance of gender specific language removed. Four of these students then presented this new draft to the Rochester Home Rule Charter Committee and City Council. The initiative received full support from the Mayor, City Council and the City Attorney.

Boys & Girls Club Chair Affair Fundraiser

Invited to submit a chair to the annual Boys & Girls Club Chair Affair fundraiser, Seth Nfonoyim-Hara, Rose Anderson and I created what may be the world’s smallest chair. Using a femtosecond laser we carved the 360 micron chair into the tip of a common sewing needle.

#NoPlaceForHate

After an alt-right hate group posted propaganda in downtown Rochester, residents responded by organizing an inclusive, city-wide campaign. These new portraits, 82 in total, feature Rochester’s diverse population. The new posters appropriated the propaganda’s design but replaced their exclusive rhetoric and symbolism with our beautiful and empowered community. Thank you to Chad Allen and Regina Mustafa for initiating and facilitating the campaign, and to Kathleen Murphy for donating her photography services.
