The Vast & Empty Ballrooms of the Double Helix's Heart

A commission to accompany the groundbreaking of Mayo Clinic’s Discovery Square in downtown Rochester, Minnesota, this public art project engaged the community around how they envision their future, including their voices in the evolving landscape.

Preceding the event, I surveyed representatives from local cultural institutions and neighborhoods. Their responses were compiled into a video that was projected during the event to inspire attendees to add their insights and vision for Rochester’s future. In addition to the video, images and quotes collected from the event’s participating groups were inserted into the environment using a free augmented reality-driven mobile app.

During the event participants were invited to add their vision for Rochester using a range of mediums such as the AR mobile app, video, printed surveys, sidewalk chalk and window paint.
