THE ARTERY

Translating individual health events into experiences

shared by the community

At Mayo Clinic, when a patient completes radiation treatment they are invited to ring a bell. New parents receive flowers from friends and family. The Artery will include the community in these and other novel experiences. The Artery’s color transitions to signal positive health events happening within the walls of our health care institutions in real time.

This is not intended to explain or console but to take us beyond our own habits of thought and perception, to challenge the obvious or apparent, to create new connections.

HEART OF THE CITY

A large-scale version of the Artery is proposed for the redevelopment of Rochester’s Heart of the City public space.

With the Artery, the Heart of the City will become a beacon connecting residents and visitors.

Patients flying into Rochester, some nervous, uncertain, will see a pillar of light celebrating the profound moments of hope and healing happening within the walls of our health care institutions every day.

TIMELINE: FROM BIRTH TO BEACON

Initial Concept

Responding to the 2016 Placemakers’ theme of Health and the Built Environment, the Artery’s initial concept utilized Rochester’s existing skyway infrastructure to signal health events happening within the community.

2016 Placemakers: Prototyping Festival

After Placemakers

Since making its debut at the 2016 Placemakers prototyping festival in Rochester, MN, the Artery has evolved, fostering feedback and support from the community and local institutions.

AT STEAM SUMMIT 2017

At the 2016 STEAM Summit last November, over 2000 middle and high school students engaged with the Artery prototype. As the crowds transitioned from middle to high school students, they began taking selfies and group photos with the Artery, repurposing the installation’s illuminated façade.

MINNESOTA GOES POP!

Earlier this year, the Artery helped launch Minnesota Goes Pop, an exhibit juxtaposing the work of Andy Warhol with contemporary regional artists at the Rochester Art Center. Displayed at the entryway of the gallery, over five hundred opening night attendees adorned in Warhol-esque fashion had their photos taken, illuminated by the Artery.
